What is Ambien

Ambien is used as short term measure for treating insomnia experiencing by difficulties of sleep during initiation phase. It has been observed from use of Ambien in clinical trials that there is decrease of sleep latency for 35 days. The clinical trials conducted supporting its efficacy had duration spread over 4–5 weeks and the assessment of the efficacy was measured by the end of the trial period.

Availability of Ambien:

Ambien is available in two dosage forms. These are 5 mg and 10 mg tablets, which are not scored. Ambien 5 mg is in the shape of capsule with AMB 5 embossed on one side and on other side 5401is embossed for identification.

Ambien 10 mg has the embossing of AMB 10 on one side with 5421 embossed on the other side for identification.

Ambien use:

There is no set pattern regarding dose of Ambien to be given there is need of individual dose adjustment depending on the response obtained. The adult dose is 10 mg in a single dose just before going to bed at night time and it should not be exceeded.

Taking Ambien:

Old age patients or having debilitation are having sensitivity to the action of zolpidem tartrate, the active ingredient of ambien. Patients having hepatic insufficiency are not in a position to excrete the drug as quickly as compared to a normal person. The advised dose Ambien in such category of patients is 5 mg per day once only just before going to bed at night. Dose in adult persons is 10 mg per day once only at the time of going to bed and this dose should not be increased.

Use in pediatric patients:

The factors of Safety and efficacy of zolpidem are not been established in pediatric patients. During 8-week study involving pediatric patients in the age group of 6–17 years and suffering with insomnia along with ADHD, zolpidem did not decrease sleep latency as compared to patients on placebo. Hallucinations occurred in 7.4% of the pediatric patients who received zolpidem; none of the pediatric patients who received placebo reported hallucinations.

Using CNS Depressants:

Dose of Ambien needs to be adjusted in situations requiring administration of other CNS suppressants drugs along with Ambien due too the enhancement effect of both the drugs. The onset of action of Ambien becomes slow if it is taken along with meals or after a meal.

Missed Dose:

Since the dose is once a day and it is to be taken at the time of going to bed, the question of missed dose is a rare event. Any way if you are sure that the dose has been missed it can be taken.

Ambien Storage:

Ambien can be stored at room temperature away from children.
